jewels. They are able to get George arrested with him not knowing who tipped the police off, in the
process George being implicated by an elderly eyewitness named Eileen Coady. With George in jail, Wanda
and Otto discover that he in turn has protected his investment by moving the jewels from their agreed
to hiding location, he not telling anyone except Ken some hint of where they are. Ken, an animal lover
with an extreme stuttering problem, is given a task by George: kill Mrs. Coady before she is able to
testify against him, as she is the crown's primary witness. Meanwhile, Wanda has a plan of her own to
reach her end goal: seduce George's defense lawyer, Archie Leach, in finding out any and all of
George's secrets concerning the heist, including the location of the jewels. Archie may be easy prey
for Wanda's seduction as Archie's wife is a self-absorbed woman who pays Archie little attention. Otto
may throw a wrench into Wanda's plans if he finds out what she's doing only feeling that she being
solely his lover trumps all else.

Across The Universe is a fictional love story set in the 1960s amid the turbulent years of anti-war
protest, the struggle for free speech and civil rights, mind exploration and rock and roll. At once
gritty, whimsical and highly theatrical, the story moves from high schools and universities in
Massachusetts, Princeton and Ohio to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the Detroit riots, Vietnam and
the dockyards of Liverpool. A combination of live action and animation, the film is paired with many
songs by The Beatles that defined the time.

While his latest movie Being John Malkovich (1999) is in production, screenwriter Charlie Kaufman
is hired by Valerie Thomas to adapt Susan Orlean's non-fiction book "The Orchid Thief" for the screen.
Thomas bought the movie rights before Orlean wrote the book, when it was only an article in The New
Yorker. The book details the story of rare orchid hunter John Laroche, whose passion for orchids and
horticulture made Orlean discover passion and beauty for the first time in her life. Charlie wants to
be faithful to the book in his adaptation, but despite Laroche himself being an interesting character
in his own right, Charlie is having difficulty finding enough material in Laroche to fill a movie,
while equally not having enough to say cinematically about the beauty of orchids. At the same time,
Charlie is going through other issues in his life. His insecurity as a person doesn't allow him to act
upon his feelings for Amelia Kavan, who is interested in him as a man. And Charlie's twin brother,
pretentious Donald, has moved into his house with a goal of also becoming a screenwriter. Despite not
admiring Donald as a screenwriter, Charlie asks for his advice. Together, they feel that there is some
interesting subtext in the book on which Orlean herself can only elaborate, if only Charlie has the
nerve to talk to her. If she can't or won't elaborate, they may have to find out the meaning of that
subtext on their own.
